When Will She Be Right?

In a year when women’s safety took up more of the conversation than ever, UN Women wanted to come up with a way for girls to feel safe again. The solution? #EmpowerMoves, a TikTok dance made of self-defence moves. To create the dance, we worked with a self-defence expert and choreographer to craft a sequence of four simple, easy to remember self-defence moves. On International Day of the Girl 2021, Empower Moves launched organically on TikTok and a series of dance moves on social, turned into a social movement.

What started as a series of dance moves turned into a movement that reached young girls everywhere, helping them to feel less vulnerable and, importantly, starting a much-needed conversation about why women should need to protect themselves in the first place. We launched organically on TikTok like any other dance. Once it caught on, we revealed the self-defence moves inside the dance. Then we shared mini video tutorials of each self-defence move for girls to learn and share.
